On this day in 1930 — Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto. A 24-year-old farm kid found a planet with patience and photographic plates.

Clyde Tombaugh grew up on a Kansas farm with no electricity and no running water. He built his first telescope from scrap parts: a crankshaft from a 1910 Buick, discarded farm equipment, and mail-order lenses. He taught himself to grind mirrors by hand. When he was 20, a hailstorm destroyed his family's crops and any hope of paying for college. So he did what self-taught obsessives do: he kept building better telescopes and sketching what he saw through them.
In 1929, he mailed his drawings of Jupiter and Mars to the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. The astronomers were impressed enough to offer him a job. The position was unglamorous. Tombaugh would spend his nights photographing the sky with a 13-inch telescope, then his days comparing photographic plates under a machine called a blink comparator. The task was to find Planet X, a hypothetical ninth planet that Percival Lowell had predicted based on perturbations in the orbits of Neptune and Uranus.
The work was tedious to the point of brutality. Each photographic plate captured hundreds of thousands of stars. To detect a moving object, Tombaugh had to compare two plates taken days apart, rapidly switching between them to spot anything that shifted position. Stars stayed still. Planets moved. The human eye, when subjected to this repetitive flicker, could detect the faint motion that mathematics alone could not yet calculate efficiently.
For nearly a year, Tombaugh found nothing. Then, on February 18, 1930, while comparing plates taken in January, he noticed something. A faint dot of light had moved. He checked again. It had moved the right amount, in the right direction, at the right speed for an object beyond Neptune. He walked calmly down the hall to the observatory director's office and said: "I have found your Planet X."

The announcement made headlines around the world. At 24, with no formal degree, Tombaugh had discovered the ninth planet. The name Pluto was suggested by Venetia Burney, an 11-year-old girl in England who thought the god of the underworld suited a cold, distant world in the outer dark. The name stuck. The first two letters also happened to be Percival Lowell's initials, a coincidence that pleased the Lowell Observatory staff.
Tombaugh continued searching for years, scanning the sky for other planets or large objects. He found none. Pluto turned out to be far smaller than predicted, too small to cause the orbital perturbations that had led to the search in the first place. Those perturbations were later determined to be errors in measurement. Planet X did not exist. Pluto was a lucky accident, a tiny ice world found while looking for something much larger.
In 2006, astronomers reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet, a decision that upset more people than it probably should have. The reclassification was not an insult but a recognition of what Pluto actually is: the largest known member of the Kuiper Belt, a vast disk of icy bodies beyond Neptune. Tombaugh's discovery was not diminished by the new designation. If anything, it became more interesting. He had not just found a ninth planet. He had discovered the first object in an entirely new region of the solar system.
Tombaugh never saw this reclassification. He died in 1997 at the age of 90. In 2006, a spacecraft called New Horizons launched toward Pluto, carrying some of his ashes. Nine years later, in 2015, it flew past the dwarf planet and sent back the first close-up images. Pluto turned out to be geologically active, with mountains of water ice and plains of frozen nitrogen. It was stranger and more beautiful than anyone had imagined.

Clyde Tombaugh spent his entire career at Lowell Observatory. He eventually earned degrees and taught at New Mexico State University, but he never stopped being the farm kid who taught himself to see deeper into the sky. His discovery was a product of patience, repetition, and the kind of attention that comes from genuinely caring about what you are looking at. The solar system turned out to be larger than expected, and the universe more crowded with small, strange worlds than anyone had suspected. Tombaugh found one of them by blinking photographic plates until his eyes hurt. Sometimes the most important discoveries come from the most tedious work.
